Bugger. I think I screwed up big time. Either I'm too nice, or I don't think fast enough on my feet, or I'm not clear enough on my job (though I am now!), or all of the above, but I'm fairly sure that this could easily come back to bite me in the ass. See, at the HCC, we aren't responsible for anything people bring in there or leave there, period. If you fall asleep and someone steals your backpack, not our fault. Of course, that's not to say we'd just let it happen, but if we didn't notice and it did, not our fault. Now, this morning, this guy comes to the door, and he bangs a bit, then leaves, but sees me and comes back. Cuz I'm a nice guy (or an idiot) I go open the door a crack to see what he wants. Usually when people do that it's cuz they want condoms or a bandaid or something and I'm fine giving that stuff out. They just can't come in. So this guy wants to leave his bag in the HCC. I tell him he can't, we aren't responsible for anything left on the premises. He says he wants to leave it. I tell him again, if he were to leave his bag, we accept no responsibility for it. As soon as this place opens at 12:30, I tell him, if someone steals it, it isn't our problem and it isn't our responsibility, and I'm not even here. He says that's fine, so I say, well then you can leave it.
If he comes back and picks it up, then all should be fine and dandy. I included the incident in my report so I may catch some flak but if he gets his bag there probably won't be any trouble.
However, what if someone steals his bag I realized later. Does that mean the HCC is liable? Does that mean that I'm liable? Does it mean Paladin is liable? Or does it still just mean what it would mean if he left it here when we were open, that it's his own damn fault? Does what I said to him, informing him we couldn't be held responsible, even count for anything? Knowing the laws in this country, even if he were to lose his stuff but still admit what I had told him, it probably wouldn't. And if he were to lose his stuff and claim I had told him it would be safe, which, let's face it, he would do, then it would be my word against his. And then if I'm technically in the wrong for allowing him to leave his stuff there in the first place, does any of that even matter?
Oi... I think I fucked up pretty good. I guess I'll just have to wait and see. I'm just gonna hope that nobody notices it where I left it until he comes in to get it. I think I felt a hardhat in there, and I really don't want to be liable for lost wages... liable for lost property I can handle, but lost wages would suck.
